Work to achieve water efficiency and sustainability across our operations

Today, 700 million people in 43 countries suffer from water scarcity

Advocate for effective water policies and stewardship

By 2025, the UN estimates about 1.8 billion people will be living in areas with absolute water scarcity, while two-thirds of the world’s population could be living under water-stressed conditions. Providing enough water for people to drink, and for producing enough food, is a global challenge that requires collaborative action.

Treat the water we discharge effectively

Wherever possible, we use municipal waste water treatment facilities. Where these are non-existent or not efficient enough, we invest in our own facilities to discharge water treated to a level that meets local legislation or our internal standards, whichever are more stringent.

Engage with suppliers, especially those in agriculture

Because agriculture is responsible for 70% of global water withdrawals, helping farmers to manage and conserve water can have a significant positive impact. We work directly with 760 000 farmers, offering technical assistance including improved water management techniques.

Raise awareness on water conservation and improve access to water and sanitation

Access to clean drinking water and sanitation is a human right and yet, the UN estimates 663 million people still have no access to improved drinking water sources, while 2.4 billion lack adequate sanitation
